In California, vehicles must undergo a smog inspection every 2 years to renew your registration. New California residents are required to have an initial inspection to register, even if you have a current certificate from your previous state.
Testing can be completed at any DMV-approved location throughout your county. Vehicles less than 6 years old are exempt from emissions testing, but you will be required to pay a $20.00 smog abatement fee before registering your vehicle.

- Diesel-powered vehicles manufactured before 1997 - or a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of more than 14,000 pounds

- Natural gas powered vehicles heavier than 14,000 pounds

If your vehicle is not in the above category and you live in a county listed on the California’s DMV website, you will need emissions testing. Your vehicle registration renewal notice will state whether to take it to any smog testing station, a test-only station, or a STAR station.
